FAQs and Supplies

I have little experience using Procreate. Is this course appropriate for me?

This is an advanced course, so some basic experience is required. If you have completed my online class Digital Tangling Intro, you'll be able to participate. When you sign up for the workshop, you also receive that video lesson as a bonus!

How long does it take to complete a digital collage?

These collages can take many hours to complete, not including the time it took to create the original drawings - typically between 5 to 7 hours for me. That's why I created this entire weekend workshop!

I don't have an iPad, but I have an Android tablet. Can I participate in this class?

Unfortunately Procreate works only on Apple devices. Many of the commands and concepts explained during class rely on Procreate-specific features.

Why do I need a paper-like screen protector and what is the best brand?

The surface of the iPad is too slippery to draw directly. The "paper-like" screen protector will make the screen a little more like fine sandpaper, making it easier to use the stylus. In my experience, there is little difference between brands, just make sure you get the right size for your iPad model. The screen protector will not damage your iPad.

Do I really need an Apple Pencil to draw on the iPad?

You will need some kind of pressure sensitive digital stylus to draw with. It does not have to be Apple, but in my experience, the Apple pencil is very superior to other brands.

Will there be any traditional, analog inking pen over paper drawing in this course?

No, all drawing and shading will be digitally done in Procreate. Please bring a selection of your own black and white drawings to choose from.

What kind of pictures should I bring to collage?

Choose preferably non-symmetric, black and white, non-figurative (abstract) tangled pictures. Choose pictures that are small enough to be photographed with the iPad.

Must all pictures I bring be completed?

You can use INCOMPLETE pictures and even doodles too! The results of a digital collage are very unexpected and sometimes a less-than-loved picture can complement another one nicely.

Can I bring artwork done in color?

In this workshop we will only work in black and white. Even if you bring colored pictures, they will be converted to black, white and grayscale.

Can I use pictures from other people or created in a different class to do the collage?

No, please bring ONLY YOUR OWN ORIGINAL artwork. Make sure your drawings are your own and not created from a class with another teacher. If you are one of my students, you may use artwork created in one my classes. Please be aware of copyrights!

Learn to upgrade and re-purpose your drawings, even the unfinished ones!

Learn how to shade your collages for incredibly 3-dimensional results

I just spent the last two days on US time (overnight 2am-9am for me!) participating in a Zoom workshop with the fabulous Eni Oken - Digital Collage weekend workshop - using my hand drawn art to create this digital collage using Procreate. Not sure my drawing is finished, but LOVED the workshop creating it.

I’ve used Procreate a little but find that I much prefer drawing, pen in hand, on paper. This was the perfect marriage of tech and using my own hand drawn artwork. It was great seeing everyone’s work and listening to others questions to enhance my learning. The pace was perfect and Eni gave fantastic demonstrations and feedback.

Magical! Great workshop. So many things to learn about Procreate. But most importantly a tool to create completely different kind of art through your existing art. Totally addictive. Like adding a dimension to one’s options. As always, Eni’s teaching makes it even better. This is not easy to convey to people with different levels of knowledge and understanding- but she did it again. Thank you, Eni.
